Central Level Projects Under the department

 

Cottage and small Industries Training Center

This centre has been operating since 1993 as one of the independent units under Department of Cottage and Small Industries (DCSI).

The main objective of this training centre is to provide training to the unemployed youths. It also provides technical backup to the district level offices. This is a kind of resource centre for skill development trainings.

The centre has following special programs

  • Leather Goods promotion Program
  • Hand Made Paper training Program
  • Ceramic Promotion Program
Leather Goods Promotion Program

Leather Cooperation Unit was established in the then Ministry of Industry in 1981 (B.S.2038) under technical assistance from World Bank with the view to utilize locally available leather, promote leather based industries and develop skilled manpower in this field.

It was restructured in 1993/1994(B.S. 051/052) as Leather Goods Promotion Project and put under the Organization Structure of DCSI.

Further it was merged in DCSI, Training Centre in 2001(B.S,2058).

Objectives

  • To generate skilled manpower in leather goods
  • To provide Technical assistance to leather goods manufacturer
  • To give Industrial development training on leather goods.

Hand Made Paper Program

A Readymade garment and hand made paper project was established in 1980 (B.S. 2037) under technical assistance of JICA.

After phasing out of the project, in 1986 aforementioned project was handed to DCSI. In 1995 (B.S. 2052) Ready-made Garment and Hand-made paper project were segregated into two separate units.

Further this project was merged in DCSI, Training Centre in 2001(B.S. 2058).

Objectives

  • To generate skilled manpower in handmade paper and paper products.
  • To organize various training programs in various places for the utilization of locally available raw material

Ceramics Promotion Program

This project was established in 1984, as per the agreement between HMG of Nepal and German Government, under technical and financial assistance of GTZ. The Project was phased out in 1998. This project was merged in DCSI, Training Center in 2001(B.S. 2058).

Objective

  • To organize training programs, to improve productivity, quality and there by assist in improving income-generating activities of the Potters by disseminating knowledge/skills/technology.

Programs

  • To carry out research work to improve productivity and quality.
  • To organize training programs related to appropriate technology.
  • To provide technical assistance/ support to entrepreneurs.

Ready-made garment project was established in 1960 with technical and financial assistance from Japanese international Cooperation Agency (JICA) with the view to develop skilled human resource on ready-made garment.

Since October 1966, after phase out of project, this project was taken over by HMG of Nepal and ran by its own source until 1995.

Since 1995 (B.S. 2052), an agreement between HMG of Nepal and Nepal Readymade Garment Industries Association was signed to run the center on joint effort and funding.

Ready-made garment was the largest foreign exchange earner during second half of 1990s. The centre's activities were boomed during this period. With the slack in ready-made garment businesses, the centre's activities have scaled down. The centre was somewhat successful to replace the skilled foreign labour during the period.

  • To generate employment opportunities to the domestic labours

Population Education Project

This Project was established in 1981 under technical and financial assistance of UNFPA.

Objective

To disseminate population and family planning education to the skilled development trainees of DCSI.

Handicraft Production Unit

It was established in 1967 as a unit of DCSI. Since 1992, it was merged in Cottage and Small industries District Office, Lalitpur.

Objectives

  • To develop & design handicraft model of traditional Nepalese culture
  • To manufacture trophy, medals etc.
  • To make available of new handicraft design for commercial production
  • To improve design of equipments used in handicraft manufacturing.
  • To conduct skill development training regarding handicraft.

Prisoners Training Unit

DCSI, in accordance with prison improvement program of HMG of Nepal, has been running training center in Central prison, Kathmandu and prisons at Jhapa, Palpa and Kaski districts.

Objective

  • To provide skill development training to prisoners to improve their quality of life and improve their behaviour so that after release from imprisonment they will be able to spend a normal productive social life.
The training canter in Central Prison, Kathamndu has been running under Cottage and Small Industries Kathmandu district office.
